Talk Dirty To Me
Can summer be nearly over already?!
I hope that this summer has been filled with lots of fun, sun and adventures for you. I can’t believe we’ve already gotten to the beginning of September. Despite a very challenging past week with storms impacting many of my flowers, there are still flowers ready to step up and keep those smiles coming! The zinnias are finally starting to make their appearance this season (have been super delayed for me this year), dahlias are coming in, as well as the continuation of my third succession of sunflowers. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of my second succession to the wind last week, but a few more will power through in the next week. The sunflowers have been very popular this year, and based on that it looks like I will continue to expand them in 2024.
Talk Dirty to Me!
Sunflowers, zinnias, and dahlias are known as “dirty flowers.” What does that mean?! Are they muddy, messy, stinky, and obscene? Well, not exactly. These flowers are more susceptible to dirtying up the water quickly. They tend to release junk and bacteria back into the water. I have had several people ask me, “How do I keep my flowers fresh for as long as possible?” Here are a few tips to extend your vase life:
Clean water. Change your jar/vase water every other day.
Make a fresh trim at the bottom of your stems every two or three days.
Make a homemade flower food to add to your water. 1 quarter water + 2 Tbsp lemon juice +1 Tbsp sugar + ½ tsp bleach. The sugar works as a food and the bleach helps slow bacteria growth.
I hope you have enjoyed some blooms this season, have had fun following along with our social media and if you haven’t stopped by yet you will swing by before our season comes to a close in the next month or so. Enjoy the Fall as it quickly approaches!
