Self-care is where it’s at

I was driving in the car the other day and Miley Cyrus’ song Flowers came on. I reflected a bit on the lyrics –

“I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours, yeah
Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can”

Why can’t I buy myself flowers?

There is no reason why I have to wait to receive some beautiful flowers. I don’t have to wait to be appreciated by someone else. I don’t have to wait for a special occasion. I can do nice things for myself just because! Because I work hard every day. Because I deserve to give myself a gift. Because I am worthy of appreciating myself.

The month of May was Mental Health Month. I believe in today’s times it is even more apparent how important it is to look inside and see what you need personally. Self-care is often overlooked. We do so many things for others, but do not always think about ourselves. What an easy way to value ourselves than with some lovely blooms. Flowers alone can reduce our stress and anxiety. They are an instant mood booster. A study conducted by Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., who is a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, showed the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner. The research is very intriguing and you can learn more in the article linked here.

My hope is when July rolls around, and the flowers are blooming quicker than I can keep up with, that I will be that source to provide you with the self-care you are looking for. I want to be your pseudo mental health care professional to relieve your stress, boost your mood and affirm that you are worth it!
